General Description: This angelfish, commonly referred to by its species name (Annularis), has also been called the Blue Ring Angelfish and Blue King Angelfish. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, its range extends from Sri Lanka to the Solomon Islands and from the Philippines to the northern tip of Australia. The adult coloration includes brilliant deep blue stripes on a predominantly brownish gold body with a white tail. Juveniles exhibit the typical swirled black/blue/white pattern characteristic of many young Pomacanthus angels. Adult size is up to 12 inches in length.
Diet Requirements: In the wild large angelfish are very omnivorous. A varied diet of algae and proteins in the form of high quality pellets, flakes, and enriched frozen foods are important for best coloration and optimal health. Angelfish specific foods that include sponge are also highly encouraged.
Care Requirements: A minimum 200 gallon aquarium with 18+ inch width is ideal. Smaller specimens can be temporarily raised in smaller quarters as long as it is upgraded accordingly. This angel enjoys a variety of rock work, but also should be provided open swimming space as well. Annularis angelfish are not reef safe due to their tendency to nip at corals, clams, macro algae, and feather dusters. Typically Pomacanthus species are semi-aggressive in nature, and this is no exception. If you are looking to avoid potential rough-housing with other tank mates, it can help to introduce them last. Another way to cheat this rule is to obtain them as a juvenile specimen. Generally younger specimens do not have as territorial of a personality, therefore making it easier to introduce tank mates without as much aggression. In either scenario, the compatability of an Annularis angelfish with other angelfish is variable, and it may best as the only angelfish species in the tank. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
