General Description: The Dolabella Sea Hare originates from shallow areas of the Indo-Pacific and can reach an impressive size of 12″. While sea hares can vary in color, they are often tan or brown with bumpy appendages that aid in their camouflage from the seagrass and coral rubble beds in which they inhabit.
Diet Requirements: Dolabella sea hares are voracious herbivores with an appetite for algae. A sea hare should only be considered for an aquarium that has an abundance of algae/algae problems. Once all of the algae is consumed, it is absolutely necessary to supplement a Dolabella sea hare with Caulerpa macroalgae or dried seaweed. Without such supplementation, the animal will perish.
Tank Requirements: An extremely established, minimum aquarium size of 55 gallons is recommended to house a Dolabella sea hare. Maintaining stable water parameters is a component to the success of keeping this invertebrate; sea hares are intolerable of high nitrates, or swings in pH and salinity. The Dolabella sea hare prefers a balance of rock and open sandbed in its environment so that it has large areas in which it can move and graze. Be sure to house the Dolabella sea hare with appropriate inhabitants that will not harass or cause stress to it; in some circumstances, the Dolabella sea hare will release a purple dye if felt threatened or startled. Having appropriate chemical filtration is necessary to remove this toxin. It is imperative to take time acclimating a Dolabella sea hare; we suggest via drip acclimation. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026.
