General Description: The Electric Flame Scallop, also known as the Electric Red Flame Scallop, has a bright red mantle with red tentacles originating from the Indo-Pacific. What distinguishes the Electric flame scallop from a standard Flame Scallop (Lima scabra) is that this species’ mantle pulses whitish/blue “electricity” across it, which is actually a form of bioluminescence. The Electric flame scallop embeds itself in the liverock and will remain in this spot unless threatened; if so, it will clap its shells together to propel through the water to get away.
Diet Requirements: Electric flame scallops are filter feeders. They are not photosynthetic and absolutely require doses of live phytoplankton on a regular basis in order to live. Additional supplemental foods can include rotifers, cyclops, or other organic materials (i.e., marine snow). It is encouraged to individually feed each Electric flame scallop from time to time.
Tank Requirements: An extremely established, minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons is recommended to house an Electric flame scallop. Maintaining stable water parameters is a component to the success of keeping this invertebrate; scallops are intolerable of high nitrates. Generous live rock and caves will mimic the Electric flame scallop’s natural environment; they do prefer lower light. Electric flame scallops can be kept in groups. Be sure to house an Electric flame scallop with appropriate inhabitants that will not harass or nip at it. It is imperative to take time acclimating an Electric flame scallop; we suggest via drip acclimation. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026.
