General Description: The Banded Coral Shrimp, also known as the Boxing Shrimp, is a popular invertebrate in the hobby for its striking body shape and coloration. With brilliant red and white bands along their body that appears to have a prickly texture, Banded coral shrimp have a pair of extremely long pinchers and white antennae. Reaching a size of 3″ in aquaria, Banded coral shrimp come from the oceans of Indonesia where they are found usually hanging upside-down in caves or crevices. Banded coral shrimp are relatively hardy once acclimated and make a productive addition to your invertebrate crew as they constantly move about the aquarium in search of food.
Diet Requirements: Banded coral shrimp are carnivores and predominately scavenge. They will accept most flake and frozen foods.
Tank Requirements: An established, minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons is recommended to house a Banded coral shrimp. Maintaining stable water parameters is a component to the success of keeping this invertebrate. Regular water changes are necessary to replenish iodine that is important for the proper molting of Banded coral shrimp. Generous live rock with caves and crevices will mimic the Banded coral shrimp’s natural environment. Banded coral shrimp are extremely aggressive with each other; only one is recommended per aquarium. While it is generally safe to add Banded coral shrimp into a reef aquarium, keep in mind that many crabs and shrimp are opportunistic on other slower moving invertebrates if their dietary requirements are not being met. It is imperative to take time acclimating a Banded coral shrimp; we suggest via drip acclimation. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026.
