General Description: The Thompson’s Tang or Surgeonfish, also referred to as the Whitetail Surgeonfish, is native to the Indo-West Pacific region where it is found shoaling in groups along steep outer reef slopes. It has a uniformly brown-purple body though with maturation, the tail will become white and more lyre in shape. An adult Thompson’s tang can reach a size of approximately 10″. Note: This species is not frequently available.
Diet Requirements: The Thompson’s tang is a bit of an exception when it comes to the typical tang diet. A Thompson’s tang is more omnivorous than herbivorous, so not only offering a diet of algae-based foods is important but also including an equal amount of protein-based foods is essential for this species. Offer frozen options such as brine shrimp, calanus, fish eggs and other crustaceans. Variety is the spice of life to maintain optimal health, coloration, and immune function.
Care Requirements: An established minimum 125 gallon aquarium with 18+ inch width is ideal. Smaller specimens can be temporarily raised in smaller quarters (no less than 75 gallons) as long as it is upgraded accordingly. This tang enjoys some rock work, but more open swimming space should be provided. For this species, generous water movement and high oxygen levels are also needed given the environment in which they come from. One of the least aggressive Acanthurus species, a Thompson’s tang typically will not conflict with other tank-mates and they aren’t overly territorial in nature. Only one Thompson’s tang is recommended per aquarium. If you want to house various types of tangs together, including other Acanthurus species, it may be best to add them all at once, or closely together at the very least, for the best success. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
