General Description: The Nerite Snail, while small, have some of the most beautifully patterned shells. Reaching a size of less than 1″, the Nerite snail has a rounded shell and will predominately spend its time on the glass eating film algae. Take care in observing these snails day to day, as they ocassionally fall off from the glass and cannot turn themselves back over if they are right side up. Upon introduction, it is not uncommon for Nerite snails to congregate in one area together. More of a nocturnal animal, Nerite snails exhibit little activity during the day. Nerite snails have been known to climb out of aquariums that do not have lids. It has been observed that putting a cover on your aquarium for at least a week can teach a Nerite snail their boundaries.
Diet Requirements: Nerite snails are herbivores. They consume various algae on the glass and live rock. If insufficient algae is present, we recommend supplementing sheet algae or vegetable-based tablet foods to prevent starvation.
Tank Requirements: An established, minimum aquarium size of 10 gallons is recommended to house Nerite snails. Maintaining stable water parameters is a component to the success of keeping this invertebrate; snails are intolerable of high nitrates. Generous live rock with some crevices will mimic the Nerite snail’s natural environment and give it space to roam. Keeping several individuals of Nerite snail are encourged given their size. It is imperative to take time acclimating Nerite snails; we suggest via drip acclimation over an hour or more. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026.
