General Description: The Assassin Snail, as its name suggests, will apprehend and consume your nuisance snail population! With such an appetite for snail, Assassin snails will use little discretion between nuisance snails and decorative snails, so use caution when mixing this snail with snail species you do not want to lose. The Assassin snail is unmistakable with its beautiful yellow and black twisted shell. We often only see the Assassin snail’s mouth sticking out above the sandy substrate much like a snorkel. When the Assassin snail detects food or is on the move, it emerges all at once from underneath the substrate. While most hobbyists add Assassin snails to eradicate Malaysian trumpet snails, these snails boast a number of other advantages to the health of the aquarium. Assassin snails are a peaceful tank mate, harmless to live plants, other invertebrates, and fish of any size. An adult Assassin snail can reach a size of approximately 1.5″.
Diet Requirements: Assassin snails are opportunistic carnivores. Their diet is primarily made up of snails, but they will consume freshwater flatworms (planaria) and detritus.
Care Requirements: An established minimum 10 gallon aquarium is ideal for a couple of Assassin snails. Size up accordingly to accomodate multiple individuals; more snails equates to more natural food resources needed to sustain them. Assassin snails are very intolerable of nitrite or ammonia spikes. Weekly or biweekly water changes are encouraged to keep water parameters up to standard (Nitrates < 20 ppm), especially a stable pH that is necessary for appropriate shell growth and maintenance. Avoid the use of copper based medications as this will cause harm to, or even kill, your snail. It is not uncommon for your Assassin snail to spend the majority of its day submerged under the substrate. Because they burrow, Assassin snails prefer a sandy or fine substrate. Assassin snails are compatible with a range of community-type fish species and shrimp. Recommended water conditions, 72-76° F, KH 2-15, pH 6.5-7.5.
