MISC – GOBY NEON BLUE
Stiphodon atropurpureus
$9.99
The Neon Blue Goby are endemic to fast-moving streams of Indonesia. One of the most beautiful nano gobies, male Blue neon gobies have a dark grayish body with a bright blueish-green lateral stripe. Females have a much lighter body color and a dark lateral stripe, often lacking any blue. Many specimens for sale, even males, may be immature and will have not yet developed their striking coloration. Blue neon gobies can be kept successfully as a male-female pair, several females, or a mixed sex group. Males can posture at each other, but typically will not fight to any length if the aquarium is spacious enough with ample decor and hiding places. Blue neon gobies have certain environmental needs in order to thrive long term (see ‘Care Requirements’ below). An adult Blue neon goby can reach a size of approximately 1-1/4″. Note: This species is infrequently available given the difficulty in collecting them.

General Description: The Neon Blue Goby are endemic to fast-moving streams of Indonesia.
Diet Requirements: Blue neon gobies are biofilm and algae grazers in the wild, which is why an established aquarium is extremely important for this species, however they can be offered a more omnivorous diet in the home aquarium. A diet made up of high quality dried foods and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia can be offered in moderation. More emphasis should be given to foods with higher algae content. Variety is the spice of life in order to maintain color, immune function, and longevity of your fish. Glas Garten Bacter AE, also sold here at Aquatics Unlimited, is a great product to help the growth of biofilm in the aquarium for biofilm grazers, like the Blue neon goby.
Care Requirements: A minimum, well established 15 gallon aquarium is ideal for a pair of Blue neon gobies. A sizable group (6+ individuals) will require more space to accomodate them all, at least 30 or more gallons. A tight fitting lid is needed as Blue neon gobies have been observed to jump out from time to time, typically while they’re settling in after being introduced. This species should not be put into a biologically immature aquarium. Blue neon gobies are intolerable of nitrite or ammonia spikes, and will not endure deteriorating water parameters well, plus a new aquarium does not have the abundant biofilm and algae that this species requires to survive. Weekly water changes are encouraged to keep water parameters favorable (Nitrates < 20 ppm). Given the habitat in which they come from, Blue neon gobies require high water flow and oxygen levels. This may be best achieved by adding an internal powerhead into the aquarium. The aquarium should be aquascaped with a darker substrate, rocks, driftwood and vegetation (live plants are a great source of algae and biofilm). Blue neon gobies are extremely peaceful and rarely conflict with tank mates. Mix Blue neon gobies with other peaceful nano-type species that also do not mind more generous water flow. Avoid overly rambunctious, competitive, or semi-aggressive species that will out compete a Blue neon goby for food. Blue neon gobies are not a threat to adult Neocaridina shrimps. Recommended water conditions, 72-82° F, KH 4-8, pH 5.5-7.0.
