General Description: The Orangetail Blue Damsel, also known as the Blue Devil, Sapphire Devil and Blue Damsel, are found throughout the Indo-West Pacific. This damsel is named appropriately for their attractive blue bodies, though it is only the males that develp an orange tail.. Damsels come from the Pomacentridae family, which they share with Chromis and Clownfish. A hardy fish, Orangetail blue damsels may be a good candidate “first fish” to add into a newer aquarium, but introducing damselfish too soon can also risk them becoming territorial to fish added afterwards. It is best practice to keep damsels in small-medium sized groups (6+ individuals) to help avoid this, but such behaviors are complex based on various environmental and individual factors. Most species in the genus Chrysiptera are known to be generally peaceful, however the Orangetail blue damsel are one of those exceptions. Males in particular should be observed closely for aggressive and territorial behavior that may cause issue in the aquarium. Males will also quarrel among themselves, so a group of one male with several females is ideal. An adult Orangetail blue damsel can reach a size of approximately 3″.
Diet Requirements: In the wild damselfish are omnivorous. A varied diet of high quality algae, proteins, pellets, flakes, and enriched frozen foods are important for best coloration, immune function and optimal health. Damsels are some of the unfussiest of saltwater livestock when it comes to feeding.
Care Requirements: A minimum 75 gallon aquarium is ideal for a group of Orangetail blue damsels. A set-up with live rock is best for the health of the aquarium, and these damselfish will appreciate crevices to swim through and take refuge. Damselfish are one of the few groups of fish that can endure the break-in cycle of a new saltwater aquarium. Orangetail blue damsels are considered reef safe; they will not bother any coral or invertebrate, though they will likely be too boisterous for many shy and timid reef species. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
