General Description: The Royal Gramma Basslet, also sometimes called the Fairy Basslet, is native to the deep-water reefs of the Caribbean, ranging from the Bahamas, to Venezuela, Antilles, Bermuda, and through the waters surrounding Central America and the northern part of South America. It has a bright pink/purple to violet colored anterior contrasted by a contrasting yellow posterior. They can reach an adult length of approximately 3 inches.
Diet Requirements: The Royal Gramma is a carnivore and mainly feeds on crustaceans and tiny fish among the reef within its natural environment. In the aquarium they should be offered a variety of meaty food items such as frozen, freeze-dried, and vitamin enriched brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. They will also readily accept marine pellets and flake foods.Â
Care Requirements: Prized for both its unique color pattern and relatively small adult size, the Royal Gramma is a hardy beginner fish that is well suited for small nano reef systems. It prefers extensive rockwork caves in which to hide and somewhat subdued lighting. Since it demonstrates territorial aggression towards its own kind, the Royal Gramma Basslet should be housed singly. However, most Royal Gramma are peaceful towards tankmates of similar size and temperament. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
