General Description: The Turbo Snail is extremely popular among marine hobbyists because of their reputation to clear large amounts of nuisance algae. Reaching an average size of 2″, the Turbo snail has a rounded, thick shell with an iridescent interior. Take care in observing these snails day to day, as they ocassionally fall off from the glass and cannot turn themselves back over if they are right side up. We stock three types of turbo snails throughout the year: Mexican Turbo Snails, Cats Eye Turbo Snails, and Zebra Turbo Snails. Due to seasonality, Mexican turbo snails are not collected between July and September; therefore, we will not have them in stock during these months.
Diet Requirements: Turbo snails are herbivores. They consume various algae on the glass and live rock, including hair algae. If insufficient algae is present, we recommend supplementing sheet algae or vegetable-based tablet foods to prevent starvation.
Tank Requirements: An established, minimum aquarium size of 15 gallons is recommended to house Turbo snails. Maintaining stable water parameters is a component to the success of keeping this invertebrate; snails are intolerable of high nitrates. Generous live rock with some crevices will mimic the Turbo snail’s natural environment and give it space to roam. It is imperative to take time acclimating Turbo snails; we suggest via drip acclimation over an hour or more. Given their size, Turbo snails can accidentially knock over unsecured coral frags. Proper calcium levels need to be maintained for Turbo snail shell growth. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026.
