General Description: The Blushing Pristella Tetra, also referred to as the X-Ray Pristella Tetra, is a selectively bred color form of the wild-type Pristella Tetra. While the wild-type has a large distribution throughout northern Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana, the demand and popularity of this fish has made it available through captive breeding programs. One of the hardiest and inexpensive tetra, the Blushing pristella tetra makes a great choice for the beginner hobbyist. Unlike the wild-type, the Blushing pristella tetra has a more transparent body and redder gills in which it gets the name “blushing.” This “blush” is blood-rich gill tissue that is more obvious to the naked eye in this color form given its transparent body. Blushing pristella tetra are natural shoaling fish, thriving best with at least 6 individuals but more are encouraged. An adult Blushing pristella tetra can reach a size of approximately 1.5″.
Diet Requirements: Blushing pristella tetra are among some of the most unfussy with regard to food. Nevertheless, offer a diet made up of various high quality vegetable based and protein based flake foods, sinking micro pellet foods and bug bites, in addition to offering frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. Variety is the spice of life in order to maintain color, immune function and longevity of your fish.
Care Requirements: A minimum 5 to 10 gallon aquarium is ideal for a small group of Blushing pristella tetra. Size up accordingly to accomodate a larger shoal. Blushing pristella tetra are one of our listed “hardy fish” because they are able to endure the initial break-in cycle of a newly set-up aquarium. Blushing pristella tetra are a very adaptable species to a wide range of water parameters. The aquarium does not need to be aquascaped with anything in particular to keep a shoal of Blushing pristella tetra happy, but a darker substrate, leaf litter (almond leaves), driftwood and other natural-looking arrangements will bring out the beauty of this tetra. Their natural habitat does not feature aquatic plants, but Blushing pristella tetra are a common species selected for live planted aquariums. Blushing pristella tetras are extremely peaceful and rarely conflict with tank mates. Their timid nature, however, may make them not suitable for typical community aquariums that have overly rambunctious or competitive species. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 2-20, pH 6.0-7.5.
