General Description: The Percula Clownfish, also sometimes referred to as the Orange Clownfish or Clown Anemonefish is native to the Indo-Pacific ranging from Queensland and Melanesia including the northern Great Barrier Reef, to northern New Guinea, New Britain, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Visually very similar to the Ocellaris Clownfish, there are coloration variations that may help identify this species, but truly the only certain method is the fact that A. percula has 10 spines in the first dorsal fin and A. ocellaris has 11. In general the Percula Clownfish is a very bright bold orange, whereas the Ocellaris tends to be more drably colored. They also tend to have a thicker black outline to its white body stripes. Clownfish will share a mutual relationship with multiple Anemone including the Sebae, Carpet, and Bubble Tip. This mutual relationship provides the Anemone with protection, cleaning, and possibly even a source of food. The mutual relationship provides Clownfish with protection, as well as a place to nest. Adults may grow up to 4 inches in length, but 3 to 3.5 inches is more common in captivity.
Diet Requirements: This Clownfish is naturally an omnivore so it is ideal to provide a balanced diet of both meaty items such as mysis shrimp or enriched brine shrimp and algae, such as Spirulina, Chlorella, and marine sheet algae. They will also readily accept high quality marine flake and pellet foods. Feeding small meals several times throughout the day will help reproduce their natural feeding behaviors on the reef.
Care Requirements: Percula Clownfish are a relatively hardy fish that is well suited to conditions found in home aquariums. Therefore, it makes a great choice for novices and seasoned aquarists alike. They should be housed in a minimum 15 gallon aquarium but thrive in larger reef or fish only aquariums with other peaceful fish and adequate cover. Their peaceful nature makes them an excellent choice to keep with almost all other community fish, invertebrates, and corals. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
