General Description: The Midas Blenny, also known as the Persian Blenny, Lyretail Blenny or Golden Blenny is a beautiful, deep golden-yellow with a shadow of light blue under the chin and bright, blue-rimmed eyes. Native to the Indo-Pacific ranging from the eastern coast of Africa, Red Sea included, to the Marquesas Islands. A large slender Blenny, adults can reach up to 6 inches in length.
Diet Requirements: Unlike most blennies, the Midas Blenny requires a meaty diet including finely chopped frozen foods, mysis and enriched brine shrimp, along with herbivorous options such as Spirulina, Chlorella, and marine sheet algae. Marine flake and pellet foods may be offered for variety.
Care Requirements: This blenny will appreciate a minimum tank of 30 gallons for a small specimen or larger aquarium for an adult with numerous rocks on which to perch. Sometimes, the Midas Blenny will become aggressive to other small planktivorous fish and has been known to nip at firefish and gobies. Larger tanks help mitigate this as many of the Midas Blenny’s aggressive behavior traits seem to relate to being housed in a smaller aquarium in close quarters with others. They are considered reef safe and will not bother coral polyps and other invertebrates. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
