General Description: The Lawnmower Blenny, also referred to as the Sailfin Algae Blenny, Jewelled Rockskipper, or Rock Blenny is a mottled tan color with oversized eyes, and typical body shape of the Blenniidae family. Native to reefs across the Indo-Pacific, ranging from East Africa and the Red Sea to Samoa and the Islands of Micronesia. A larger Blenny species, they can grow up to 5 inches in length.
Diet Requirements: The Lawnmower Blenny does best in well-established aquariums with large amounts of natural algae to feed on. The diet can be supplemented with vegetable matter such as Spirulina, Chlorella, marine sheet algae, and herbivore flakes and pellets.
Care Requirements: A minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons will suffice, but like other Blennies the Lawnmower Blenny will perch on live rock, hide in caves, hop across the substrate, and actively graze on microalgae. Therefore, it benefits from a larger tank with a variety of live rock and rockwork. The Lawnmower Blenny is peaceful towards other fish unless the tank mate is similar in shape or appearance to the blenny. It is best to house them singly unless kept in a larger aquarium and the two are a mated pair. They are generally considered reef safe. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
