General Description: The Harlequin Basslet, or Bass for short, also referred to as the Tiger Basslet, is found in the western Atlantic Ocean including the Caribbean Sea. Its appearance is quite attractive with a striking pattern against a whitish-yellow body. One of the larger species in Serranus, Harlequin bass can reach an adult size of approximately 5″.
Diet Requirements: The Harlequin bass is primarily carnivorous. A diet largely consisting of high quality, vitamin enriched frozen preparations is absolutely necessary to maintain optimal health, coloration, and immune function. Such foods can include, but are not limited to, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and carnivore mixes. We highly encourage soaking frozen foods in vitamin and fatty acid supplements. A Harlequin bass may accept high quality flake and pellet foods.
Care Requirements: A minimum 55 gallon aquarium, with plenty of live rock for hiding, is ideal for a Harlequin bass. They are generally peaceful, though may show territoriality toward fish of similar shape that also spend time near the bottom of the aquarium. Only one Harlequin bass is recommended per aquarium, and the Harlequin bass is not compatible with other basslets. A Harlequin bass will not pick at corals, however larger specimens may attack small shrimps or nano fishes if they can fit in their mouth. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
