General Description: The Black Cap Basslet is a deep water species found throughout the Caribbean. Its brilliant purple body and jet-black cap make it a striking addition to any aquarium. Native to the western Atlantic ocean, ranging from the Bahamas and southern Florida, throughout the Caribbean. Adults reach approximately 4 inches in length.
Diet Requirements: In the wild Black Cap Basslets feed on zooplankton, although larger fish have been recorded feeding on small crustaceans which they swallowed whole. They require an aquarium diet consisting of a variety of chopped meaty items, vitamin enriched brine and mysis shrimp and marine flake and pellet foods.
Care Requirements: Provide your Basslet with at least a 30 gallon tank with rock caves to hide in. An excellent choice for a reef aquarium, the Black Cap Basslet is a threat to only the smallest invertebrates such as Copepods, Isopods, or Amphipods. Black Cap Basslets can become territorial once established, so they should not be kept with other Basslets. Because they tend to be deep-water dwellers, they prefer an aquarium with slightly subdued lighting. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
