Diet Requirements: In the wild Denisonii barbs are omnivores. A diet made up of various high quality vegetable based and protein based flake foods or sinking pellet foods are ideal, in addition to offering frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. Variety is the spice of life in order to maintain color, immune function and longevity of your fish. The red pigmentation in Denisonii barbs can be accentuated further if fed a food with a high concentration of the carotenoid astaxanthin (such as New Life Spectrum Ultra Red pellets).
Â
Care Requirements: An established minimum 55 to 75 gallon aquarium is ideal for a group of Denisonii barbs. A tight fitting lid is highly suggested because some individuals are known to jump. Denisonii barbs are intolerable of nitrite or ammonia spikes. Weekly water changes are encouraged to keep water parameters up to standard for Denisonii barbs (Nitrates < 30 ppm). Given their natural habitat of living in fast-moving river and stream systems, Denisonii barbs like more generous water flow and a well oxygenated environment. The aquarium can be aquascaped with rocks and driftwood, but vegetation (whether artificial or live) is preferred on the denser side. Denisonii barbs are live plant safe and rarely conflict with tank mates. Given their activity level, Denisonii barbs could intimidate slower-moving or shy fish species. Recommended water conditions, 68-78° F, KH 4-10, pH 6.5-7.8.
