Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatible: No
General Description: Commonly referred to as the Asfur Angelfish, this species may also be known as the Arabian Angelfish or Crescent Angelfish. This is a popular and stunning specimen from the Red Sea, but can also be collected from the Indo-Pacific. This angel may be confused with the Maculosus Angel (Pomacanthus maculosus), but aside from bolder more iridescent colors, the Asfur has a yellow tail fin while the Maculosus Angel has a white or clear looking caudal fin. Typically fish collected from the Red Sea have superior color and hardiness, and often are more desirable. In order to obtain fish from the Red Sea, collectors must adhere to high standards of collection and sustainability. This will result in a higher price tag on any fish originating from the Red Sea. As adults they have the potential to reach over 12″.
Diet Requirements: In the wild large angelfish are very omnivorous. A varied diet of algae and proteins in the form of high quality pellets, flakes, and enriched frozen foods are important for best coloration and optimal health. Angelfish specific foods that include sponge are also highly encouraged.
Care Requirements: A minimum 200 gallon tank with 18+ inch width is ideal as a permanent solution for adults. This angel enjoys a variety of rock work, but also should be provided ample swimming space as well. Be sure to note how your Asfur angel is behaving. If your angel is acting shy, pale, skittish, or has irregular appetite, it probably has to do with its environment. If your tank is to open (lacking structure or rock-work), this could be why. Although ample swimming space is important, so is a balance of suitable coverage. Asfur angelfish are not reef safe due to their high drive to nip at nudibranchs, corals, clams, macro algae, and feather dusters. Typically Pomacanthus species are semi-aggressive in nature. Unlike other Pomacanthus species, this species is a bit more timid but the compatability of an Asfur angelfish with other angelfish is still variable. It may best as the only angelfish species in the tank. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
