General Description: The Colored Bubble Tip Anemone is a beautiful and unique addition to a saltwater aquarium. Found in oceans all over the world, bubble tip anemones come in a variety of colors including greens, tans, browns, and maroons. Under ideal conditions, this type of anemone will develop a bulb tip at the end of each tentacle. They can reach a maximum size of 12″ in diameter, but bubble tip anemones tend to stay on the more compact side in aquaria. Bubble tip anemones are the most successful at hosting various clownfish species, including the popular Ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris). Take care when handling any type of anemone, as each tentacle contains stinging cells that will cause irritation to the skin.
Diet Requirements: Directly feeding your bubble tip anemone at least once per week is recommended. The tentacles may lose their bulb shape and become more elongated if inadequate food is being provided (though this could be attributed to insufficient lighting, also). Dietary suggestions include pieces of jumbo mysis shrimp, krill, or silversides. Pieces of food can be fed by using a pair of forceps and dropping it just above its oral disc onto the tentacles.
Tank Requirements: An established, minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons is recommended to house a bubble tip anemone. Maintaining stable water parameters is a major component to the success of keeping this invertebrate. Additionally, bubble tip anemones require moderate to high lighting in order to thrive. Depending on the aquarium depth, this can be achieved by the use of HO T5s, metal halides, or high end LED fixtures. Many crevices should be created with reef rock in order to mimic the bubble tip anemone’s natural environment and give it ample places to attach its foot securely. Bubble tip anemones will freely move around the aquarium until a suitable spot is found. Because of this unpredictable movement, adding an anemone to a reef aquarium is “with caution” as they have the capability to sting any coral in their path or where they settle in. A clownfish, or clownfish pair, are a great asset to the health of your bubble tip anemone. They protect, clean, and feed it; not to mention their symbiotic relationship is so cool to see happening in your aquarium! Bubble tip anemones are incompatible with other anemone species. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026.
