STARFISH – BLUE LINCKIA Linckia laevigata

$29.99

The Blue Linckia Starfish, also known as the Blue Starfish or Blue Sea Star, make a remarkable statement in a reef aquarium of the very dedicated hobbyist. Blue linckia starfish are not hardy and are extremely sensitive to water parameters (see Tank Requirements below). Originating from Fiji, the Blue linckia starfish can reach a size of 12″ across. The body of this starfish is a vibrant blue, and some individuals may also have tiny spots of red or purple embedded within. Blue linckia starfish are solitary animals, but can be kept with other docile starfish species. Be certain to check the underside of each arm on your new Blue linckia starfish for parasitic snails (Thyca), as these ectoparasites graze off of the host’s tissue. These ectoparasites often take on the coloration of their host, so look closely! A Blue linckia starfish should not be considered for an aquarium less than a year old given their dietary requirements.

General Description: The Blue Linckia Starfish, also known as the Blue Starfish or Blue Sea Star, make a remarkable statement in a reef aquarium of the very dedicated hobbyist.

Diet Requirements: Blue linckia starfish are omnivores. They predominately consume bacterial films on the glass, but their diet also includes sponges and they may grab other free-floating microbes in the water column with their arms. Pieces of frozen clam or other meaty foods can be supplemented to the Blue linckia star, best placed underneath it. These supplemental foods do not replace its natural diet nor can it sustain a Blue linckia starfish longterm.

Tank Requirements: An extremely established, minimum aquarium size of 90 gallons is recommended to house a Blue linckia starfish. Given its size, diet, and sensitivity to water parameters, any tank smaller than a 90 gallon would likely prove fatal very quickly to a Blue linckia starfish. Maintaining stable water parameters is the most important component to the success of keeping this invertebrate; they are intolerable of high nitrates. Blue linckia starfish are sensitive to temperature, pH, and salinity changes; when these occur, it makes the starfish susceptible to bacterial infections. These bacterial infections act quickly, turning portions of an arm, or arms, white as they decompose. Generous live rock with some crevices will mimic the natural environment of the Blue linckia starfish, as they are often found in sunlight areas on reef fringes in the wild. It is absolutely necessary to take time acclimating a Blue linckia starfish; we suggest via drip acclimation for no less than two and a half hours. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.025. Never expose the Blue linckia starfish to air while handling.
