General Description: The Crowntail Betta fish, in this case Male, also known as the Siamese Fighting Fish, occur naturally throughout central Thailand in sluggish waters of rice paddies, swamps, ditches, and ponds. All specimens at Aquatics Unlimited are ornamental strains produced by the aquarium trade; few wild-type specimens are offered. Because of this, Male bettas can vary tremendously in color pattern, body and fin morphology, and price. Bettas are labyrinth fish, which means they have a lung-like organ that allows them to breathe air in addition to having a functioning set of gills. Male bettas absolutely need to be kept solitary. Housing more than one Male betta in the same aquarium will result in quarrel and death. Males and females should also be kept separate unless in spawning condition. Male bettas (in most cases) differ in appearance from females in that their fins are much more long and elaborate. An adult Male betta can reach a size of approximately 2.5″, but this may vary depending on the ornamental strain. This listing is for our Male Crowntail betta, which can be quite variable in coloration, but all of the fins will have a spiky comb-like appearance.

Diet Requirements: Betta fish are often fed a staple diet of a high quality floating pellet. Treats such as frozen or freeze-dried blood worms or brine shrimp are encouraged. Some vegetable matter in the diet is also beneficial. Variety is the spice of life in order to maintain color, immune function and longevity of your fish. Make sure not to over feed your betta, as they are prone to obesity.

Care Requirements: A minimum 5 gallon aquarium is ideal for a Male betta. Bettas should not be introduced into a biologically immature set-up, or the water should be changed frequently enough to not allow the build up of harmful ammonia from decomposing food and waste. Given their natural habitats, Bettas do not like strong water flow. The aquarium does not need to be aquascaped with anything in particular, but a finer substrate, floating plants and other natural-looking arrangements will bring out the beauty and personality of your Betta. Compatability of Bettas with other community-type fish is variable; some Male individuals are tolerant of other species while others are not. Avoid male Guppy fish, as their tails too closely resemble the morphology of another male Betta. Bettas do not do well in excessively large aquariums. Bettas may be able to eat small Neocaridina or Caridina shrimps. Recommended water conditions, 72-84° F, KH 1-15, pH 6.0-8.0.
