General Description: The Purple Reef Lobster, also known as the Debelius’ Reef Lobster or Purple & Orange Reef Lobster, has an overall lavender body with orange spots and a pair of elongated, flat claws used for defense that are usually purple, also. These lobsters originate from the Indo-Pacific and reach a maximum size of approximately 5″. More of a nocturnal animal, the Purple reef lobster is seldom seen out and about during the day.
Diet Requirements: Purple reef lobsters are omnivores and primarily scavenge at night. It is best to feed the aquarium various meaty and vegetable based foods to ensure the Purple reef lobster is getting what it requires. Target feeding the Purple reef lobster pieces of meaty foods during the day with forceps is also recommended if possible.
Tank Requirements: An established, minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons with a deep sand bed for burrowing is recommended to house a Purple reef lobster. Maintaining stable water parameters is a component to the success of keeping this invertebrate. Creating crevices or caves with liverock will mimic the Purple reef lobster’s natural environment. Caves are particularly important for the lobster to have somewhere to hide during the daylight, but are also a safe place for the lobster to recover after it molts, as this period is a vulnerable time while its new exoskeleton hardens. While the Purple reef lobster is observed to be peaceful in reef environments, it is to be added “with caution” in regard to smaller fish and invertebrates. Most small lobster species do not pose a threat unless they are underfed. Purple reef lobsters are extremely territorial toward each other; only one should be kept per tank. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026.
