LOACH – SIBERIAN SPINY
Cobitis sinensis

$19.99

Introduced into the hobby in 2008, the Siberian Spiny Loach are found in shallow, clear water streams of Taiwan and coastal China. While this is an attractive species, the Siberian spiny loach is imported very irregularly. One reason could be that it is more of a temperate water species, thus having different temperature requirements compared to the bulk of most other warm-water fishes, including other loaches (see Care Requirements below). Siberian spiny loaches are social, so they should be kept in groups of 4 or more individuals. With little information on this species in the home aquarium, it is estimated that a Siberian spiny loach can reach an average adult size of approximately 4″. Note: This species is infrequently available.

General Description: Introduced into the hobby in 2008, the Siberian Spiny Loach are found in shallow, clear water streams of Taiwan and coastal China.

Diet Requirements: In the wild Siberian spiny loaches are carnivores. A diet made up of various high quality protein based flake foods, tablet foods or sinking pellet foods are ideal, in addition to offering frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and other mixed freshwater preparations. Variety is the spice of life in order to maintain color, immune function and longevity of your fish.

Care Requirements: An established minimum 30 gallon aquarium is ideal for a small group of Siberian spiny loaches. This species should not be introduced into a biologically immature or unstable aquarium. Biweekly water changes are encouraged to keep water parameters ideal (Nitrates < 30 ppm). Siberian spiny loaches require a sandy to fine substrate; too coarse of a substrate could cause injury to them because they do spend a lot of time on the bottom and may even attempt to bury themselves. In the wild, Siberian spiny loaches are subjected to much colder temperatures (50° F), however they can thrive at the lower end of the tropical scale (no greater than 74° F). They are opportunistic scavengers, making them very beneficial to have to forage for extra food of all kinds that has fallen to the substrate. Given their size and temperament, Siberian spiny loaches rarely conflict with other fish but can be easily bullied by more semi-aggressive bottom-dwelling scavenger species. It is best to refrain from adding other fish that occupy the bottom of the aquarium to avoid this and extra competition. Choose tank mates accordingly, but some common compatible options include tetras, rasboras, angelfish, dwarf cichlids, and livebearers. Recommended water conditions, 60-74° F, KH 5-15, pH 6.5-7.5.
