General Description: The Giant Danio is native to the Indian Peninsula and Sri Lanka. Many Giant danio available within the aquarium trade are commerically produced. While Giant danio are relatively hardy, aquacultured specimens have an extra leg up on their wild counterparts being better acclimated to artificial environments. A mature Giant danio will have a shimmering silver body with an accent of blue, and a couple of horizontal orange stripes. Many Giant danio offered for sale are young and have yet to reach this potential, appearing more plain. Giant danio are natural shoaling fish, thriving best with at least 8 individuals but more are encouraged. Danios are gregarious, and too few of individuals can result in them harassing other tank mates. An adult Giant danio can reach a size of approximately 4″.
Diet Requirements: In the wild Giant danios are omnivores. A diet made up of various high quality vegetable based and protein based flake foods, sinking micro pellet foods and bug bites are ideal, in addition to offering frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. Variety is the spice of life in order to maintain color, immune function and longevity of your fish.
Care Requirements: A minimum 20 gallon aquarium is ideal for a group of Giant danio, especially for much larger specimens. A tight lid is required to avoid this danio from accidentially jumping out. Giant danios are one of our listed “hardy fish” because they are able to endure the initial break-in cycle of a newly set-up aquarium. Giant danios prefer a well oxygenated environment and generous water movement. The aquarium does not need to be aquascaped with anything in particular to keep a shoal of Giant danio happy, but river stones, driftwood and other natural-looking arrangements will bring out the beauty of this danio. Giant danios form loose hierarchies, and it is not uncommon to see a pair of males quarreling. Avoid tank mates with long fins, such as guppies and angelfish, as Giant danios may be proned to nip these. Nipping or harassment behavior is typical of danios when they are not kept in large enough groups to keep themselves occupied. Mix Giant danio with other species that match their extremely active nature, and avoid timid or docile species. Recommended water conditions, 74-82° F, KH 5-18, pH 6.0-8.0.
