Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatible: With Caution
General Description: The Yellow Angelfish is found throughout the western and central Pacific extending from southern Japan and Taiwan east as far as the Tuamotu Islands and south to Australia. This species is also known as the False Lemonpeel Angelfish, and is uniformily yellow in color. They resemble the Lemonpeel Angelfish except they are lacking the blue highlights around the eyes and the edges of the fins. They can reach an adult size of approximately 4.5 inches.
Diet Requirements: Naturally a herbivorous species which feeds on filamentous algae in the wild. The aquarium diet of the Yellow Angelfish should include Spirulina, Chlorella, marine sheet algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis or enriched frozen shrimp, and other meaty items. Marine flake and pellet foods may also be offered for variety.
Care Requirements: The Yellow Angelfish requires a minimum of a 75 gallon aquarium with hiding places and large amounts of live rock for grazing. In the wild they are commonly found on outer reef slopes, and occasionally on lagoon reefs. The Yellow Angel can be extremely aggressive towards its own species and towards fish with similar coloration or shape. It will do well in a community aquarium with peaceful or semi-aggressive fish as long as it is added close to last. In the reef aquarium, this species may nip at large-polyped stony corals, some soft coral polyps, and clams so caution is required. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
