General Description: The Hi Fin Snapper, also known as the Sailfin Snapper or Blue-lined Sea Bream, is native to the Indo-Pacific. Don’t let this giant fool you; even though this snapper can reach an impressive adult size of 24″, the Hi Fin snapper is relatively docile. Care must be taken when choosing tank-mates, as more aggressive or pugnacious species could nip at its flowing fins. Striking as both a juvenile and an adult, the coloration of this snapper only intensifies with age. A very active fish, the Hi Fin snapper will surely make a statement but should only be considered for very large fish-only with live rock aquariums in order to provide it with ample room to swim and grow.
Diet Requirements: Hi Fin snapper are carnivores. A diet consisting of various proteins and frozen preparations such as brine shrimp, squid, mysis shrimp, krill, and chopped fish will maintain optimal health and coloration. Because snappers are active swimmers, multiple smaller feedings per day rather than just one feeding may be more beneficial.
Care Requirements: A minimum 125 gallon aquarium that is at least 18″ wide is ideal for small and/or juvenile specimens. An adult, full grown Hi Fin snapper will require an aquarium of, give or take, 300 gallons in order to thrive long term. The Hi Fin snapper appreciates some live rock in the aquarium, especially a cave or two to take refuge under if felt threatened; otherwise, open swimming space is ideal. Hi Fin snapper are best kept as one individual per aquarium. Snappers will consume invertebrates and fish small enough to fit in their mouths. Recommended water conditions, 72-78° F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025.
