General Description: The Nassarius Snail is a small species with a big appetite. Reaching a size of 1″, the Nassarius snail has a beautiful oval-spiral shaped shell and is extremely adept at keeping your substrate clean. This snail will burrow down in the sandbed, often with its tube-like siphon protruding above the substrate. As it glides through the sandbed foraging for food, the substrate is aerated and kept from compacting too densely, making for an overall healthier environment. It’s astounding what a group of Nassarius snails can accomplish; during feedings, a group of Nassarius snails may rise up out of the substrate at once like a bunch of zombies! They’re an entertaining and welcomed addition to any invertebrate clean up crew.
Diet Requirements: Nassarius snails are carnivores. They consume detritus, uneaten food, and other decaying organic matter on top of and within the substrate.
Tank Requirements: An established, minimum aquarium size of 10 gallons is recommended to house Nassarius snails. Maintaining stable water parameters is a component to the success of keeping this invertebrate; snails are intolerable of high nitrates. A deep and open sandbed will mimic the Nassarius snail’s natural environment and give it space to roam. Keeping several individuals of Nassarius snail are encourged given their size. It is imperative to take time acclimating Nassarius snails; we suggest via drip acclimation over an hour or more. Recommended water conditions: 76-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026.
